The UK government is dragging its feet on rent reforms that would protect renters in England from unfair evictions. While the proposed Renters (Reform) Bill is far from perfect, it would give people in England some of the rights enjoyed by renters in other parts of the UK. While the legislation has been stalled, tens of thousands of people have been evicted in precisely the way the bill would ban.
However, some Conservative MPs are keen to stop this legislation and there’s a huge row in government about whether or not to go ahead with it. A strong show of public opinion could tip the balance.
