Tell the CMA to investigate false hydrogen claims

A British Gas van | Avpics / Alamy Stock PhotoBritish Gas advisers have been caught misleading customers with false promises about green energy. The company’s "heating sales advisers" claimed that hydrogen fuel will be rolled out across the UK and that boilers sold now are capable of burning hydrogen instead of gas – neither of which is yet established.

The Competition and Markets Authority has already issued warnings on how "greenwashing" claims about hydrogen could mislead customers. But now it needs to go further and open an investigation into hydrogen greenwashing by the gas industry – and take firm action when people are being misled.

Will you please email the CMA now to ask it to stop the gas industry from making false hydrogen claims? This kind of contact from readers can be very effective.

We have written a draft message for you – but it's far more powerful if you use your own words. You might want to tell the CMA that:

  • You’re concerned to learn that British Gas advisers have been misleading customers with false promises
  • You want it to open an investigation into "hydrogen greenwashing" by the gas industry
  • When customers have been misled you want it to take firm action.
Say why this matters to you. And please remember to be polite and respectful. It makes your message much more effective. You may be angry but the CMA’s staff are people too. Please direct your ire to the situation, not the people.
