Email your MP about backdoor lobbying

Powerful corporate interests are making millions of pounds worth of donations for access to Parliament through an opaque network of backdoor lobbying, an openDemocracy investigation has found.

An expanding network of so-called All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) – informal cross-party groups run by MPs and lobbyists – has taken in more than £13m worth of funding from private firms, including arms manufacturers and healthcare businesses, in the past four years.

APPGs have repeatedly lobbied for causes that benefit private donors. Worse, some APPGs are not transparent about their accounts and donations. And parliamentary authorities are accused of turning a blind eye to the system being abused.

Right now, a powerful committee of MPs is investigating what’s going on with APPGs. To make sure the system is tightened up we need to show that this is something we, the public, care about. Please will you email your MP to tell them that you want more transparency in how these groups are run?
